The South Fork John Day River Backcountry Byway "parallels the Wild and Scenic South Fork John Day River through its incised canyon for a distance of 50 miles from its northern terminus at Dayville to the northern border of Malheur National Forest to the south." Murderers Creek (The Ranch): Out & Back | 39 mi, Gain: 1,700 ft, Surface: 95% gravel , 5% paved

(3) Recommended subset of Dirty Freehub route

The best segment of the Dirty Freehub route seems to be Mile 9 to Mile 19.7. If you park at the Pine Tree Campground, it is about a 20 mile out-and-back route to The Ranch.
